My fondest memory of Garry happened in a scene during our Jr. Jam.  It was a beach scene and Merle Guthrie coupled us up and Garry decided that we should be lovers.  Of course I agreed.  We played it up big, staring longingly into each others eyes, hugging and trying our best not to laugh out loud.  That's my recollection of Garry who was always ready to laugh.  His memory brings a smile to my face.

In high school, I think I saw Garry mostly in the cafeteria.  I could almost feel his presence.  I'd turn and there he'd be......smiling.

Years later, while I was co-managing my (first) husband's architecture firm, we were searching for a design architect.  From a competitor, I learned about this talented guy who was between jobs.  Stunned when he told me the name, "Garry McMurtrey," I blurted, "Garry, Garry?  Garry with two R's McMurtrey???"  I didn't even know he had moved to Los Angeles.

I rushed to phone him ---- to catch up and to see if he was still looking for a job.  Well, obviously, it WAS the Garry with two R's, and as we shared our recent pasts, I found myself asking if he was married, to which he just laughed. (Was I the only one at BTHS to not know he was gay?)

Garry worked for us for years. He was smart, funny, eager, present, talented, quick and became a great friend.  In his last few years, he worked for the City of Los Angeles.  Benefits were great, including a four-week paid vacation, which our little firm could never have offered, and methinks he enjoyed because he could spend more summer vacation time in Fire Island. Oh, the stories he shared.......

He's been gone a very long time. If memory serves, he died in the 80's.  I miss him.
