Larry was a great guy. He used to work at a gas station next to Wainwright's Hamburger and near Emge School. Several times we would distract him while someone poured a small amount of motor oil into the carburator of his 1958 Ford. It was a beautiful car, V-8 and mellow glass-pack mufflers. Anyway, when he would start the car to leave after work, we'd all laugh at the trail of smoke going down the highway.
It was my first real taste of death when he returned in a box from Viet Nam. My wife Donna and I attended his wake in 67. I think of him often and wish he had lived to have a family. He would have been a great Dad. Several years ago, I found and traced his name on the Viet Nam Memorial Wall.
I was stationed at Fort Sill in the Army when my Mother notified me of Larry’s death in Vietnam. Larry, Rich Hackman & I were buddies. Our girlfriends at the time were all friends. When one of us were having trouble with our girlfriend we would hide the guy in the trunk, pick the girl up and talk to her about the problem in hopes that we would find out what the problem was.
